Private plane flights to be restricted during 2012 Olympics

Private pilots will have to book take-off and landing slots at a most airports and even small airfields in the South East during next year's London Olympics, the Government announced yesterday. The restrictions will apply not only to business jets, but also to amateur flyers taking light aircraft for brief flights.
The announcement by Transport Secretary Philip Hammond aims to cut delays and disruption to flights in the South East's congested skies during the London 2012 Olympics. In a written parliamentary statement, he said the Airports Slot Allocation (Amendment) Regulations will mean ‘that during the Games the available air space capacity over the South East of England will be able to accommodate the maximum possible number of extra flights’.
Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City airports are already subject to restrictions. The new rules add 36 other airports and airfields, from large airports such as Birmingham to tiny airfields such as White Waltham Airfield. Mr Hammond said: ‘All flights operating in controlled airspace and intending to use a co-ordinated airport will need to obtain, and operate in accordance with, pre-booked take-off or landing slots.’
