Airport submits planning application to increase flights by 50%

London City Airport has submitted plans for a 50% increase in the number of flights it can handle each year, as it seeks to grow to handle 3.9 million passengers by 2010. However, the airport said that the proposals will not see any change to its opening hours or the introduction of night flights. The planning application is for an increase in annual flight movements to 120,000 from the current level of 80,000 by 2010.
Richard Gooding, the chief executive at London City, said: 'The proposed growth ensures we can serve the visitors that will be attracted to the area in advance of the 2012 Olympic Games. The airport will continue its commitment to local communities by providing a significant increase in jobs over the next 3 years.'
Currently around 2000 local jobs are supported by the airport's activity, this would increase by around 1000 should the application be approved, and it is committed to recruiting locals, with more than 70% of all employees living within a 5 mile radius of the airport.
In addition, the introduction of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) link to London City Airport has seen almost 80% of passengers use public transport, boosting the airport's 'green' credentials. The planning application can be found at http://www.londoncityairport.com/planningapplication
