Airport reports employment figures

London City Airport has released statistics on its employment of local people - on the day of a council meeting to decide its planning application to increase flights. Along with concessions, airlines and handling agents, there are more than 2000 people working at London City. Of these, 68% live within 5 miles of the airport, with 29% living in Newham.
A Development Control Committee meeting takes place tonight at Newham Town Hall, where London City Airport chiefs are hoping to receive council approval to increase plane movements by 50% to allow a maximum of 180,000 annually. However, according to the airport's statistics, it is already the largest private-sector employer site in Newham.
