Flights cap increased

The flights cap at London City Airport has been increased by 50 percent. The Borough of Newham has agreed to raise the number of flights from 80,0000 to 120,000 a year in and out of the airport, despite objections from environmentalists. The expansion will create 957 jobs and generate £26 million for the local economy, the airport said.
Environmental groups opposed the increase in flights on the grounds that it will increase harmful greenhouses gases and increase noise for local residents. However, a Newham Council spokesman said that early morning flights will not be increased and that there will continue to be strict restrictions on night and weekend operations.
Last year a record 3.2m passengers passed through the Docklands airport, a 12 percent increase on 2007. Passenger numbers are expected to be lower in 2009, with a 20 percent drop so far this year. However, the airport expects passengers will rise next year 3.9 million, as the economy picks up and more flights are offered.
