Airport passengers up 23%
11.01.08
A record number of passengers passed through London City Airport last year, with the Docklands hub handling more than 2.9 million passengers in 2007, up 23% over the previous year. The figures were boosted by a number of new routes, including to Belfast, Glasgow, Groningen, Madrid, Nice, Oslo and Vienna.
The airport is gearing up for even more passengers this year, with a number of new routes already announced including to Berlin Tegel from Lufthansa and to Nice, Barcelona, Warsaw and Amsterdam from British Airways. They will mean that, from the Spring, Eleven airlines will serve 33 destinations across the UK and Europe from the hub.
In addition, London City has submitted a planning application last year to expand its capacity from 80,000 to 120,000 flight movements, which would create an additional 1000 jobs at the airport. It is already spending £30 million constructing four new aircraft parking stands and the departure lounge is being reconfigured to allow for additional passengers to be accommodated, with a 40% increase in seating for departing passengers. Both projects will be completed in the Spring.
