Fog closes airport
12.02.08
London City Airport suspended flights for much of yesterday morning due to fog. The timing is unfortunate, as Monday morning is one of the busiest times for the airport, which is popular with business travellers because it has the shortest check-in time of London's airport, at just ten minutes.
A spokeswoman for the Docklands hub, which boarders the Thames and does suffer from fog disruption, told the Times that, as the airport has a short runway, the margin for error is 'limited' due to the steep takeoffs and landings that are required there. It therefore decided to suspend flights.
The newspaper reports that the decision to suspend flights was taken at 06:30, and that they did not resume until after 11:30. The airport's website was still warning passengers of the disruption in the early afternoon.
