MP slams airport over car park costs
14.09.09
An MP has accused UK airports - and particularly London City - of ripping off passengers over car parking charges, the Daily Express reports. Fees can add up to 45% of the cost of a holiday, and the worst offender is London City Airport where passengers who turn up without pre-booking are charged £252 for a week and £504 for a fortnight.
To park at the short-stay car park at London City works out at £287 a week, while two weeks is £574. At Heathrow the pre-booked cost of a weeks stay is £63.90, Gatwick is up to £62, and Luton £67.99. The average across 10 British airports is £45, the newspaper reports.
Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker said: ‘What is the point of trawling the internet to get cheap air fares, only to get ripped off by our airports?’ He said parking at London City was ‘exceedingly bad value’, adding: ‘The amount being charged for its car parks is probably enough to pay for a return flight to New York.’
A spokeswoman for London City Airport told the Express that the charges were designed to encourage passengers to use public transport links like the Docklands Light Railway, rather than add to road congestion in east London.
