Cable car project delayed over safety zone fears
11.02.11
A safety assessment on the planned cable car link across the Thames has been launched after concerns were raised that it could be too close to London City Airport. Transport for London (TfL) has asked the National Air Traffic Services (NATS) to conduct a review, but still aims to deliver the project in time for the Olympics.
The cable car will link 2012 Olympic venues at Greenwich to the Royal Docks in east London. It was designed to cut journey times between the O2 arena and the ExCel exhibition centre, both of which will host events.
As previously reported, Friends of the Earth, although it supports the plans in principal, wrote to Mayor Boris Johnson over concerns that the cars will travel through the ‘public safety zone’ around the airport.
