Pilot error lead to runway incident
17.09.09
A plane touched down too fast at London City Airport, which led to its four main tyres bursting, a report by safety inspectors has concluded. The Air France plane, flying in from Paris with 55 passengers and five crew on board, burst all of its main landing gear tyres during the scheduled landing in February 2007. The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) report also found that the pilot had used an incorrect braking technique.
AAIB inspectors said the plane touched down at a speed that was higher than ‘appropriate’ for the weight of the plane. The pilot then deployed emergency brakes mistakenly thinking that the plane's wheel braking systems had failed. The fast landing and use of emergency brakes, which were not fitted with an anti-skid system, caused the four tyres to burst. No-one on board was injured in the incident, but it did cause delays whilst the runway was cleared.
