Airport marks coming of age
18.01.08
London City Airport has marked its 21 birthday. It has been operating for 21 years, and has celebrated its 'coming of age'.
Richard Gooding, the docklands airport's chief executive, described the hub as a 'special part of East London'. He said that the airport: 'boasts 2.8 million passengers, 1600 staff, 80,000 air movements and more destinations every year. But like any 21-year-old, it has its eyes set firmly on the future. That will mean more air movements, 120,000 to be exact.'
The airport has lodged a planning application with Newham Council to increase its air movements by 50% from 80,000 to 120,000 in order to allow for growth up to 2010. A decision is expected later this year.
