BA could launch more US flights; will expand long haul strike flights

BA chief executive Willie Walsh has said that the airline will operate all its long-haul services if its cabin crew goes ahead with another wave of strikes over the summer. He also said the airline is committed to expanding its services to the US, and was considering adding flights to Boston, Washington and Chicago from London City.
Talks between BA and Unite broke down this week and are reported to be 'deadlocked'. Speaking at the Business Travel Market in London yesterday, Mr Walsh said he was confident that enough cabin crew would defy any further strikes to keep the airline flying.
In the last wave of strikes BA operated all its services from Gatwick and London City, and from Heathrow, it operated 60% of short-haul and 80% of long-haul. Mr Walsh said: ‘If there is future industrial action, we will build on that and fly 100% of long-haul services.'
He added that BA was committed to expanding services to the US, where demand remains robust despite the economic downturn. BA already runs a service to New York from London City. Mr Walsh said: ‘We have two aircraft there, and if it continues the way it has we will look at additional services.' He said it was ‘only a matter of time’ before the airline expanded its transatlantic services from other airports too.
