British Airways will launch holiday flights from London City Airport next year to exploit the longer range of a new fleet of regional aircraft and boost passenger volumes in the quietest months for business travel. But the leisure passengers will need watch the cost of parking at the airport, which can be over £500 for two weeks.
Destinations served using BA's five new 98-seat E-190 jets on order from Brazilian manufacturer Embraer could include Spanish holiday islands of Majorca and Ibiza. Peter Simpson, managing director of BA’s CityFlyer unit, said: ‘We hope to put our toe in the water later next year. We will be looking to sweat the assets.’
CityFlyer currently offers nine routes from London City to business destinations including Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Frankfurt. However, the new planes have a range of up to 2,400 nautical miles, 1,000 miles further than the BAE Systems Avro RJ aircraft that they are replacing, making holiday destinations more accessible.
