Marathon runners and stranded passengers fly in
23.04.10
Marathon runners held up by the restrictions on air travel iver the last week flew in to London City Airport yesterday, as event organisers spent almost £150,000 to charter planes to pick up elite athletes ahead of the weekend's London Marathon. Race organisers managed to get many of the elite runners to central Europe, then chartered planes to fly out and collect them.
At the same time BA has been using the airport to bring back 1000 passengers stranded in Spain, operating extra flights from the Docklands airport. BA CityFlyer is operating 5 extra flights from London City to Madrid and Barcelona between now and Sunday to collect the passengers.
