Campaigners plan flights increase challenge
23.07.09
Campaigners want to launch a legal challenge against plans to increase the number of flights from London City Airport. Earlier this month Newham Council agreed to allow an extra 40,000 plane journeys a year from the docklands airport, bringing its annual flight total to 120,000. However, protesters argue the increase will lead to greater pollution and noise for people living in areas such as Wanstead and Woodford which are under the airport's flightpaths.
The challenge is being launched by the Fight the Flights group. Spokeswoman Anne-Marie Griffin said legal advice already taken had suggested there was a ‘very strong case’ for a judicial review of Newham Council's decision. The group is appealing for funds from the public before they begin legal proceedings.
