Swiss to float damaged plane down the Thames

Swiss International Air Lines and its insurers are to organise the repair of the BAe Systems Avro RJ100 plane that was heavily damaged in a hard landing incident at London City Airport last month, Flight International reports. An airline spokesman told the aviation news website: 'The final decision has been taken to repair it.'
The plane is a 7 year old RJ100, registered HB-IYU and owned by Zurich-based Anson Aircraft. As previously reported, it was flying in from Geneva with 93 passengers and crew when it made the hard landing on August 18. It suffered a tail scrape, cracks and severe damage during the landing.
The spokesman said that early evaluations suggest the repair work will take 14 weeks. He declined to comment on the cost of the work and on the cause of the incident, which is subject to an investigation.
Due to space and maintenance constraints at London City the aircraft must be moved off-airport to perform the repair work. The spokesman says it will be towed onto a marine pontoon and floated a short distance along the Thames river to the north Royal Dock area where a repair centre has been set up.
