Mayor urged to intervene over airport expansion
25.02.10
Boris Johnson has been asked to intervene on the decision to allow London City Airport to expand. The London Assembly called yesterday for an urgent review of the decision by Newham Council - the airport's planning authority - to give the green light for a 50% increase in flights.
Assembly members unanimously backed a resolution over concern at 'overflights' causing noise nuisance over Greenwich, Isle of Dogs, Bow, Hackney, Leyton, Wanstead, Dagenham, Hornchurch and Bexley. Murad Qureshi, who proposed the motion, said: ‘London City Airport cannot be allowed to expand at a rate which threatens the quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Londoners.'
‘Increased flight numbers, type of aircraft and the flight paths will have an impact on the residents living far beyond the boundaries of Newham. This is clearly a strategic issue that the Mayor can and should offer leadership on.’
