OFT clears Air France-KLM / VLM deal
25.10.08
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has cleared Air France-KLM’s acquisition of Dutch airline VLM, after concerns over competition on the London City Airport to Amsterdam route – dominated by VLM and Air France subsidiary CityJet - were dealt with.
The deal has been approved after Air France-KLM agreed to make several peak slots at the Docklands airport available to Eastern Airways so it could launch a competing service on the route. The OFT believed that otherwise the incumbents (CityJet and VLM) could have cut flights between the two airports in order to drive up air fares.
Eastern Airways plan to launch 8 daily services on the route from January 2009, with four flights at peak times.
