Airport rebuts council non-consultation claims
30.12.09
Details have emerged of three opportunities missed by Redbridge Council to have input on plans for a 50 percent expansion of flights at London City Airport, the Wanstead Guardian reports. The newspaper has seen a letter from Richard Gooding - chief Executive of London City Airport - to Redbridge Council leader Keith Prince stating that the authority was notified about, or offered access to, information about the airport's plans for up to 50,000 extra flights a year on three occasion since 2006.
During a committee meeting in November, Redbridge planning officer David Hughes said that the council had not been consulted by neighbour Newham Council - the airport's planning authority - about the expansion. However, the newspaper reports that the letter from Mr Gooding proves that senior officials had been given the chance to discover the details 3 years ago.
According to the letter the airport sent Redbridge Council a copy of its Master Plan during its first consultation period in March 2006, and invited councillors and planning officers to attend a briefing on the proposals on May 3 that year - but received no response. The airport also sent an email to the council with a briefing about its planning application on August 3 2007.
Councillor Prince told the newspaper that he was not aware of receiving the letter but would make enquiries with his staff about the matter.
